Degrees are still worth something to employers after that. But it's not much normally; it just shows that you'll follow rules for an extended period.

Years of hands on experience is worth way more, of course.

Um, in what way is it only needed for 6 months?

I would never hire an engineer without a degree, regardless of work experience. Too much liability.

I'm an aerodynamicist and went to school for psychology. Most of my work experience is on HVAC systems. I'm not even a licensed engineer. I'm also in a position where I can turn down work just because I don't like your shoes.

I would never hire you as an engineer for my airplane. When it crashes, everything gets looked at, and I say, "Well, yeah, my chief engineer has a psychology degree and no engineering license." And now I'm out billions in lawsuits. No thanks.

However, I need a replacement part created for an obsolete AC unit, and the tool and die guy says, give me a drawing, sure, i'll call you.

You build airplanes? If I told you where I've worked you'd never fly again :). The things I do, I do because, I'm good at it, personal pride, I'll just leave it at that.

Kek. Fair enough.

The things I do, I do because, I'm good at it, personal pride, I'll just leave it at that.

I just dont trust lawyers. They ruin everything good.

Me neither, they invent ghost charges for frivolous things they didn't do. I only observe the laws of physics, following is optional.

You know why?

Because they're jews.

Would you hire an engineer fresh out of college with no experience?

[ - ] cyclops1771 1 point 1.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 20:28:47 ago (+1/-0)

Would you hire an engineer fresh out of college with no experience?

Yes. that way I can train them properly on how to do the job correctly (i.e., my way.) And they are hungry to learn, not lazy and stuck in their own ways.

[ - ] osomperne [op] -1 points 1.8 yearsSep 2, 2022 23:53:25 ago (+0/-1)

Ok now for my actual question: would you hire a college graduate 6 months after graduation with no experience?

[ - ] cyclops1771 1 point 1.8 yearsSep 3, 2022 12:23:33 ago (+1/-0)

Yes, why not? Same answer. That way I can train them on how to do the job my way, not some other schmucks way.

If you are worried about getting a rotten apple from the barrel, you go instead to the tree.

[ - ] osomperne [op] -1 points 1.8 yearsSep 6, 2022 01:44:06 ago (+0/-1)

Yes, why not?

What about 2 years out of college no experience?

[ - ] cyclops1771 1 point 1.8 yearsSep 6, 2022 08:53:38 ago (+1/-0)

Sure, why not?

Perhaps they chose to backpack across Europe or South America for 2 years. Perhaps they took care of elderly granparents or the family farm for 2 years. Perhaps they decided to get married and pop out a puppy first. Hence why you always ask about gaps in their CV.

[ - ] osomperne [op] -1 points 1.8 yearsSep 8, 2022 19:51:01 ago (+0/-1)

Where the difference between something doing all that stuff or sleeping in every day and gaming with respect to the job?

3 years out boo experience?

[ - ] cyclops1771 1 point 1.8 yearsSep 8, 2022 20:06:26 ago (+1/-0)

Nothing, but better stories, probably.

Still dont get your point.

I am not going to hire an unlicensed engineer to build anything of any import because of liability reasons.

[ - ] osomperne [op] 0 points 1.8 yearsSep 13, 2022 23:01:57 ago (+0/-0)

Nothing, but better stories, probably.

Then why did you give a list of reasons (implying there is a limited list of acceptable reasons) for not working for a period of time?

[ - ] osomperne [op] -1 points 1.8 yearsSep 9, 2022 11:23:51 ago (+0/-1)

5 years out no experience?

Still dont get your point.

Yes you do

[ - ] Grospoliner 2 points 1.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 12:11:39 ago (+2/-0)

This is incorrect.

Engineering licensure requires a degree in lieu of 4 years of work experience out of the required 8 years minimum mandatory required experience. This makes a degree valuable for companies who need signing engineers.

Additionally, you will not get work at a company without a licensed engineer on staff. Especially if you are trying to start your own firm.

So this advice is complete trash and should be disregarded.

You're missing the point. Would they hire a fresh out of college student with no experience?

Yes.

Answer the question

[ - ] osomperne [op] -2 points 1.8 yearsSep 2, 2022 23:57:14 ago (+0/-2)

In STEM the school work is the same as the job; although the business will have a particular nitch

Nothing I learned in either of the colleges was directly transferrable to a job. The most I got out of it was using the language and that would have happened with any usage of the language, so college doesn't get credit for that.

Not totally true. Some companies put this info in company reports. The more degree holders is better advertising and valuation. I watched LexisNexis go from not caring to making it a thing because they wanted that number.

It's going to vary from place to place.

[ - ] osomperne [op] 0 points 1.8 yearsSep 1, 2022 19:27:11 ago (+0/-0)

Tell me more about this LexisNexis program

With the proper acct I can take your current address and in minutes tell you the name of the guy who lived across the street from you when you were ten. I can tell you his name and everyone who lived there. And a great deal more.

You will often hear the name dropped in police procedurals because it's just that ubiquitous in the legal and news and govt worlds.
