When out of 169,000 registered charities in the UK, no one turned up on any of their doorsteps with a pack of briquettes and whatever else would have helped them to endure the awful cold .. they just let 'em die, whence excess mortality was something like 1800 extra deaths every day.

I would not give the charities the time of day for the same reason. Footnote, an Englishman I ran into did tell me how bad it was, he was a hospital tech and left England and came to Australia that winter to escape the fearful cold.
