When the banks print they are performing a wealth transfer to themselves. There is a misnomer that the Federal Reserve and Treasury are the only ones that print. The banks have that virtual capacity.

If I lend you $5 and say pay it back whenever you want, no term, and give you zero percent interest on it, did I just loan you $5 or did I just give you $5. Especially when we are talking about a corporation that has a duty to their shareholders to act in their own interest. It's not like the analogy where you might give me the $5 back at some point because it was the right thing to do.

Now let's say I at the same time have a money printer. I not only can let you borrow $5 from me but any amount you want. That's equivalent to you having the money printer as well. Bank of America has a money printer. When a recession is on or any economic difficult like covid, interbank lending rate gets set to below inflation (essentially having a zero or negative real interest rate), and the print is on.

Back when your parents had a mortgage the banks owned nothing. For them to be able to give people mortgages sufficient to buy houses it required that they had savers that they paid a pretty penny to get access to. You weren't borrowing a house from a bank like you do today. You were borrowing access to a house from your neighbors and the banks were a middle man. Their margins were tight. Over the course of a mortgage they would not make a whole house worth's of money on top. Why is that relevant to say? Because how the fuck did they get enough money to own almost all property in the country outright when total real estate has more than double? There is no way those margins on a much smaller amount of property paid for ownership of much much much much more property. They printed it.

Printing money is theft. We say that taxation is theft but it's only done so the dollar has value. The dollar is a don't go to jail token. You need to give someone of it to the government every year to not go to jail. Then because it has value they can print access to any and all property in the market on demand, and have essencially done that for all real estate and basically rent it back to the society that built the houses. The government consumes some of the printed money to cover deficit but the larger client of printed money is the banks directly. That's how they got to own everything (minus equity which is the non-banking sector wrestling a portion of our property back).
