In 1995 I was working my first part time minimum wage job, and getting something like $4.25 per hour. I probably could have gotten 4-5 gallons of gas for an hour's pay.

Today, even with a higher minimum wage, I'd be lucky to get 1 or 1.5 gallons of gas for an hour's pay.

This is actually a very good metric. Another good metric is a gallon of milk.

I think it was higher. In 1980 it was over a dollar.

Up an down a bit, depends on your state. In my area it was right around a buck in 98. I had just started driving.

$5 was enough for a pack of smokes and a few gallons of gas

Pff. You could still buy cigs for less than that out of cigarette machines in a restaurant back then!

This was just before George Bush came into power and shut down the Iraq oil supply threat which were keeping prices low for his Saudi Arabian buddies and business partners in the Carlisle group. George Bush immediately invaded Iraq shutting down the second largest supply of oil in the world thus putting remaining reserves and a much higher price re-enriching the Saudis who at that time were actually struggling with keeping power and talking about having to get rid of a lot of the financial programs in Saudi Arabia which allowed the ruling party the ruling family to keep power.

so after the invasion of the Iraq War (the second Iraq war) after 9/11 in 2001 the oil prices went right back up where they were when ironically George W Bush's father and the previous president in 1988 through 1992 had also had an Iraq war which also drove oil profits through the roof for the Saudi Arabians which they shared with George Bush Senior through the Carlisle group.
