Nice, we have a couple of those growing as well. We like to keep them on the vine as long as possible to get the sugar content up.

Looks like your vine is wilting a bit, might want to add some water. On the really hot dry days of summer when they wilt like that, we'll sprinkle with water mid-day, then again at dusk.

one tip, if you are going to save seeds, plant different types of squash far away from each other. they tend to cross-pollinate and then you get some interesting (but still edible) squash. Pumpkin is from the same family, so keep those separated as well.

another tip, we get some of them growing on a trellis, so the squash hang from the vine instead of sitting on the ground. you can even use a tomato cage and just spiral the vine around as it grows.

last thing, we need to spray a tiny bit of sevin where the stem comes out of the ground. i hate to do it, but the vine borer will kill the plant halfway through the season if you let them live. just spray a little bit once a month or two months.

we are terrible farmers, but at least we try and learn as we go ;-)

now I have to go get those slugs!! argh.

I've been told that wild species of the Cucurbit family will also pollinate domestic varieties and can introduce the bitterness they are known for.
Hand-pollinate as soon as the flower opens then seal it with a paper bag till it closes.

This is entirely anecdotal, but I seem to get better yields with certain types of squash by doing this -- most notably butternut.

When I was young and inexperienced, I planted cucumbers and squash next to each other. They were both WILDLY successful, had squash and cukes coming out of our ears..... And then we had squashumbers. I learned a good lesson that year lol

Thanks you for the gardening advice.

I didn't think you could water them while the sun was out but I'll be sure to give them a "sprinkle" soon then.

I kept them as long as possible the plant is dead . Crispy leaves, the leaves flattened down to the ground the whole 9 . We thought it was the heat doing it but all the other blossoms died off so he said pull them. I'm going to cook one tonight and see how they taste.

They were planted in the other side of the yard from the acorn squash but the plant was so ugly I didn't want to show it.

I am a very disorganized gardener and everything does tend to just grow on the ground. I need to work on making sure they end up on the trellis for sure.

I was about to put one up for the tomatos the other day and my husband said why bother now it's too late and that I would damage them if I moved them around. Is that true?

I used diametaceous earth and haven't seen any bugs but I think I might try that sevin you mentioned . Probably less mess to spray.

yeah, I resemble that remark ;-)

put one up for the tomatos
hard to say, but I would probably agree. really depends on the state of the plant and the cage. if the plant is really bushy and the cage is a bit small, then it would probably damage the plant. if things are growing ok, don't mess with it. i have seen youtube videos where people trellis their tomatoes, but never tried it.

diametaceous earth
i have heard about that, particularly for fleas on the rabbits (which we don't have anymore cause they stink and we are suburban dwellers). i will need to look that up for gardens as well. thanks!

Awesome!

Are they butternut squash? They do not have the tapering top is why I ask. Also, nice job.

Looks like spaghetti squash.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 3 points 1.7 yearsAug 29, 2022 11:18:56 ago (+3/-0)

They are spaghetti. The plant next to them on the left are acorn ( they're still babies.)

Thank you! First time growing them. I wish it would've produced more but the plant already looks like it's dying. So I'm happy with the three amigos.

Hol up there before you start wishing stuff you could regret!
When I was about 8 we planted some spaghetti squash. They took off like crazy! We had spaghetti squash that was easy 18 to 20 inches long and big around as a full size football! Dozens of them! We ate spaghetti squash til it was coming out our ears! We Have away all that we could until the neighbors and people at church hated to see us coming! LOL. And I loved every minute of it!
Good job on your squash!

Thank you but oh your family was blessed!
Now I want to measure them. Just to see. :)

Your poor mom probably worked herself crazy trying to come up with different ways to cook them. I can't imagine.

That's some nice looking Rosemary.
One of the neighbors in Jacksonville had a plant that was the size of a medium Yew bush.
I still have trouble believing that's possible.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 29, 2022 14:42:19 ago (+1/-0)

Thank you, can you believe that started from a simple twig from Walmart?

That rosemary is 3 years strong. Survived snow and below freezing temperatures and came back brilliantly. I'm proud of her.

I had this giant sage bush I'd started from seed and mom pulled it when I hired her to mow my yard (she had fallen on hard times.)
That thing had to have been pushing 10 years because I'd had it from before I went to college; survived many a transplant and brutal Summers and Winters.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 29, 2022 15:48:16 ago (+0/-0)

Sage? Nice. And extra kudos for the 10 years that's amazing.
Was it an accident? Or did she just not like it?

My grandpa was relentless about me cutting down an avocado tree we had once and I straight refused.

I caught him about to start chopping one time ohhh I was livid.

[ - ] La_Chalupacabra 1 point 1.7 yearsAug 29, 2022 16:24:52 ago (+1/-0)

I believe it was an honest mistake.
She probably didn't realize it was the same tiny plant I'd had before moving away from home, although sage is kind of hard to mistake for a weed.

my gourds look better

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 30, 2022 12:19:37 ago (+0/-0)

Those are fighting words.

Put em up then let's see them . You won't because they're tiny little chinky fucks.

Maybe if you worked on those instead of expanding your "horizons" you would have something.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 30, 2022 12:22:39 ago (+0/-0)

my fat gourds bring all the niggaz to the yard, faguette

Beautiful!!! My squash (yellow crookneck and spaghetti) did okay, not great. Just didn't get enough rain. You can water all you want but there's no substitute for good soaking rains. Good to see some great success here. Congratulations!!

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 0 points 1.7 yearsAug 29, 2022 21:52:59 ago (+0/-0)

Ok I'm not a hippie but I did try that moon water thing so ..idk...because lord knows I forget to water a lot. But most times my husband remembers.

Congratulations on yours too! Oh and crooknecks? I'm jealous.

Next time I'm trying that egg in the dirt trick everyone's been going on about.
