Funny thing is the words of that song are very defeatist. Today it's considered a very happy show and a funny show and it is but when it came out what struck me was how the basis of the show was all these young people hadn't achieved what they had hoped to in their life and life was a joke as the song says and all this stuff. In comparison prior shows typically showed successful families married with children happy father doing well and the mother happy to raise the kids. Friends was one of those shows that sort of educated a whole generation that they were never going to make it they were always going to be stuck doing meaningless things and shared apartments with a whole bunch of other people who didn't make it. Now it was funny and the characters were likeable but that was the actual just of the show and it was a big change from shows prior to that.

Even though Adolf and Eva were on a break, they finally did get together but the show ended abruptly. The spinoffs are increasingly popular.
