Don't use "built-in browsers"

TikTok the app (or the website… do they have a standalone website?) does not “track you on external websites.” It cannot spy on you while you’re in other apps or your browser simply because it sits on your device (or on other websites just because they have a cookie on your computer; again, I’m not sure if it has a standalone website). What it can and does do (as does every single other fucking worthless “social media” service) is track every keystroke you make on every website you visit *within the in-app web browser inside TikTok itself.

Apps are allowed to call up the device’s browser APIs to serve people a “quick and easy” way to view another webpage while remaining inside the app (rather than having the device hand off the URL to the real browser). From within this in-app browser, TikTok still captures every keystroke you make and knows what sites you visit and how long you visit them. Facebook does this, instagram does this, Pinterest does this, etc. If you instead go out to your real browser, TikTok can’t track you, nor can it see what happens inside other apps.

Apple, for their part, has been notified of this misuse of their acceptable terms of developer use and has privately stated to developers “This is not what we intend. We’re working to force developers not to do this.” But google doesn’t give a shit.
