One thing you never hear brought up in these conversations, is that by the summer of 1939, the entire world had just watched the Soviet Union massacre at least 30 million of their own people specifically to accomplish the 100% militarization of their entire economy for over a decade by that point.
And not only was the open policy of the Bolshevik party, complete world domination, but they had over 3 million soldiers lined up right on their European borders with no barracks, 100 million maps of western Europe and 100% offensive weaponry. Right from the artillery, to the long range bombers, to having 20 times more parachute troops then the entire world combined… all just sitting their ready to be victimized by big bad Hitler.

The Soviets objective was so unquestionably evil and aggressive, that Hitlers motivations for attacking them is irrelevant in any discussion of good vs bad in ww2. It literally doesn’t even fucking matter if Hitler attacked cause he felt threatened or not. The Soviets had already genocided 50-70% more people then the highest Jewish accusation would come to blame Hitler for.

Every conversation of good vs bad guys in ww2 has to take place in the context of the Soviets having dedicated their entire economy to world invasion for over a decade before the first bullet was even fired.
