I guess I'm trying to figure out what you mean by real financial criminals. Not that I want them to go after small businesses, but what is it that you think people are getting away with? The code has so many carveouts that people who can afford good lawyers can evade taxes perfectly legally. The easiest cases to make are those against people who don't know the law. You're responsible for obeying the law even if you can't possibly understand it in a lifetime.

I would like to see them make complicated cases against big evaders, though, because there is much that is questionably legal. That's what you have seen with the cases they're trying to make against Trump. There are undoubtedly many other people doing exactly what Trump did, which may or may not be legal. They go after him politically, while ignoring the others.

If you suffer from a politically dissident ideology it is very important that you do not make a habit of going around committing felonies every day as if it is nothing. You listed two categories, the stupid and the desperate the cheat on their taxes. If you fall into the small business category (desperate) there is often more money for you at the end of the day if you pay your taxes legally and have a very knowledgeable accountant take care of it all.
