Found a new use for the air fryer

submitted by Gowithit to Cooking 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 17:23:15 ago (+12/-0)     (Cooking)

It roasts peppers and garlic!!!

Red bell peppers yesterday maybe took 15 minutes and the garlic today maybe 10 minutes I think it was less wrapped in foil.

Game changer!!

If you already knew this shame for not letting me know.

@Ragnar did you ever end up getting one?

If you already knew this shame for not letting me know.

Should we tell him cooking in foil leaches metals into his food?

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 3 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 17:58:04 ago (+3/-0)

Note taken. I guess I don't really need the foil if it's in the air fryer.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 19:55:09 ago (+0/-0)*

That's why I like it so much, but charcoal or chips add so much flavor!

[ - ] Feelsgood 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:20:32 ago (+1/-0)

Adding wood chips to your air fryer adds flavor? Take me to flavor town!

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:29:20 ago (+1/-0)

No, don't do that. It'll start a fire.

I have a smoker and a grill. If you don't want to spend cash for a smoker, just buy a bag of chips and use a camping smoker. If you are starting out this is the most reasonable/cost-effective route. They are small and cheap, if you like it then get serious and buy a cabinet.

you know that's why many people have iron deficiency nowadays right genius?

Most everyone back in the day used cast iron to cook

Now hardly anyone does

[ - ] PostWallHelena 3 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 19:06:17 ago (+3/-0)

Dont supplement iron. Iron causes cancer.

I mean, supplement iron. But just you. No one else. Forget about the first thing.

No kidding! 2 women I know stopped eating red meat because it's bad for you and after a few weeks almost 2 months it really affected them.

Less energy and both of their periods stopped.

They didn't take any supplements to replace the red meat when they stopped eating it.

What? I've been prescribed iron.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:22:45 ago (+1/-0)

Fuck I just wrote a long reply and talk.lol logged me out and dumped the comment.

I dont know the background of your ostensibly anemic condition. So I dont want to tell you the wrong thing. But I would seriously examine the need to take extra iron as you age, especially given a risk factor like BRCA which I think you have. Talk to the doc and ask him if the iron is really necessary and point out the literature on iron and cancer.

The relationship between iron and cancer is complicated. There might even be a couple cancers that are reduced by iron intake. But in general, there’s a pretty strong positive correlation between increased iron intake and cancer.

Interestingly there are a few novel cancer strategies that use iron overload to kill cancer. Complicated.

But in general stay away from iron supplements unless you are really deficient, especially as you age.

Read: Iron and Cancer -2018 (Torti)
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8118195/pdf/nihms-1634656.pdf

Also iron is not good to take for infections like the flu or covid. I think the viruses need iron and your body tries to sequester iron to keep the pathogen from using it. Or something like that.

[ - ] dulcima 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 17, 2022 03:41:53 ago (+0/-0)

Interesting. I'll look into this further. I've had iron infusions too.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 2 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 18:05:13 ago (+2/-0)

I have cast iron. Duh. I'm not your mom with those dollar general tin pans she used.

I do for breakfast over a log. It's fun and the chickens love to eat the egg shells. Dog loves the fire, boy loves the fire...

[ - ] diggernicks 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:05:53 ago (+2/-1)

Chickens eating egg shells?

You cannibalistic bastard

Whats next, you gonna feed beef jerky to cows?

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 2 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:09:52 ago (+2/-0)

Chickens eat their dead friends when ran over in the street.

I don't know if it's going to ping him with the underscore.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:26:28 ago (+0/-0)

I heard it from a neighbor we all called hillbilly when I was a kid. I don't believe it either, but I find it funny and believable for a chicken!

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:37:22 ago (+0/-0)

When I got home one time he told me he saw a chicken get date raped.
said he saw a rooster lead the chicken to a watermelon we threw out, made sure she was in there eating and then did his deed.

So I wouldn't put it past them.

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:57:22 ago (+1/-0)

That's how I get laid. Make dinner, get booty. I have never had to initiate.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:14:49 ago (+0/-0)

If it benefitted the cows, maybe. It's nothing but bad stuff, all the way down though. I'd have to say no.

Wait! You have your specialties and I have mine and this is where you are in my profession.

The air fryer is easier to clean than a deep fryer.

Look at that you didn't even have to marry me to get that expert knowledge.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 21:07:54 ago (+1/-0)

Easier to clean, it does "fry" stuff with a much smaller amount of oil, it is smaller/faster and therefore uses less energy, and you can use it for all sorts of stuff like grilling meats/veg/whatever.

[ - ] killallpedophiles 3 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 17:50:03 ago (+4/-1)

i roast garlic while its still in the peel. takes awhile on the grill but after like an hour it makes this garlic paste. it squeezes out the ass end pretty well, yummy stuff.

[ - ] ParnellsUprising 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 18:31:20 ago (+1/-0)

Try it with elephant garlic, you get a shit ton more, and it has a slightly buttery flavor.

I do this all the time, especially for crab cakes, you make a lemon aioli ( fresh mayo), and the roasted garlic, delicious.

[ - ] killallpedophiles -1 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 18:42:23 ago (+1/-2)

ive heard the elephant garlic doesnt have that same strong garlic flavor that i know and love. i also like setting whole unpeeled garlic and shallots on the grill, has the same effect. i can eat roasted onion with a fork, shits so good.

[ - ] ParnellsUprising 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 19:50:49 ago (+0/-0)

There is definitely truth to that, but by roasting garlic, you are in effect changing and muting the flavor. Once muted as such, the differences are not as pronounced, yet yield a very pleasing flavor and texture.

This all has to do with the “Chemistry of cooking”, and the variety of garlic. For example, if you were to cut the general store bought “soft neck” variety as opposed to “elephant” variety, and slice thinly, the soft neck would be far more pronounced over the elephant. However, once roasted, the soft neck will lose much of its intensity, and while there still is a difference, it will not be as pronounced.

I would recommend that you give it a try, much as a raw onion can be tamed and sweetened by caramelizing it via sauté.

Yes! But now it can be done in about 10 minutes. Somehow I'm going to have to find out a way to keep this thing on the counter.

If it doesn't blow around, you can cook it in the air fryer.

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 19:54:19 ago (+1/-0)

I don't do it enough. We have a big one from when we lived in the RV full time. It's still there, I should use it to roast peppers for a snack while I'm weeding.

Thanks for reminding me!

You're set for making paprika, now.

[ - ] puppy528 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:52:17 ago (+0/-0)

I clean out the bottom of the basket, put enough water in it to be just below the removable grill part, and steam my veggies in mine.

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:57:49 ago (+0/-0)

It steams vegetables???

Works well enough for me. YMMV.

I'm looking into an air fryer, and considering the Ninja Foodi. Which brand and model do you use, and what's your experience been using an air fryer?

[ - ] Gowithit [op] 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:07:39 ago (+0/-0)

I have the gourmia. The French door style one. I only ever used it for frozen foods before but recently I found out it toasts bagels and well now the roasting.

Oh and those little sausage link things cook really well in there. Breakfast for 5 people was done in less than 20 minutes. I was shocked.

I've tried the bacon in there and making quesadillas once in it but nothing is going to beat the cast iron on those.

I figure it's for quick items but now that I see can use it for prep I'm a little excited about it.

I wanted the foodie too and even the though the price has come down by a lot it was just so big I didn't see where I could put it.

If I had the space in the kitchen for it I probably would have jumped on the foodi.

Hopefully someone answers in here if they have one so I can live vicariously through them.

[ - ] HughBriss 1 point 2.7 yearsAug 16, 2022 20:41:08 ago (+1/-0)

Thank you kindly for your response. The wife suggested to me both the Gourmia and the Ninja Foodi when air fryers started to become popular, and they were quite expensive. I was curious whether the rapid food preparation and convenience were good trade-offs for the price. Looks like they are. But I agree, for some things, nothing will replace cast iron. I wouldn't consider cooking bacon, sausage, or quesadillas in anything other than my Lodge cast iron.

I've considered several brands and it looks like the Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 is what I'm looking for. But you're right, the size needs to be taken into consideration, but when I think of the other appliances I can replace with this (pressure cooker, rice cooker), It seems to be a good trade-off. And you're right again that the price has come down. This monster is only $99. I can realize a lot of value for that.

Thanks again for your reply. I'm always happy to talk to someone who loves cooking, even if it's simple meals.

[ - ] puppy528 0 points 2.7 yearsAug 17, 2022 12:00:08 ago (+0/-0)

I have a dual-basket Ninja. It's nice if you want to cook two things, but generally just means one half is still dirty from last time I used it.
