Self help is exactly that, helping yourself, going to others for help is something else entirely. The best solution is to work on yourself, make excellence a goal for yourself. Once you achieve that, others will notice and be drawn to you, then opportunities open themselves up to you. I studied aerodynamics as a hobby, to make my car faster, I learned things, applied them, others started to notice and I was offered a job. I worked and kept studying, kept applying what I learned, and now I'm in a position where I can turn down work.

The best thing you can do for yourself is pursue excellence and the opportunities will come.

I agree, persuing hobbies that create are a fantastic way to "get rich" in life.

I like growing plants and being around animals. I like programming PLCs because machine control and robots fascinate me. Those all led me to owning a lot of land and buildingy own automated homestead. I rarely work and it leaves me with plenty of time to spend however I want.

The domesticated academic doesn't even think, he just does and counts on it, when he enters his office with his $100k dollar degree on the wall, that the light in the room is going to come on when he flips the switch. I think faculty pay rate varies pretty wildly. An adjunct is making crumbs, an associate professor is making perhaps $75 - $120k, and someone with full tenure could earn $150k+ easily. I want to say Jordan Peterson's salary at UofT was $175k.

This depends on the university as well; we can imagine the faculty at Harvard (tenured salary is something like $250k) is compensated much better than faculty at X-State University. Some professors demand higher salaries because they are prolific writers and are widely published, with many schools that would wish to have them.

Administration gets the big bucks. I've been sickened by seeing some of the $300k - $400k salaries for diversity officers.
