Cat Stevens became a Muslim and renamed himself Yusef Islam. When Rushdie's fatwa was announced, Yusef Islam implied that Rushdie deserved to be killed for his blasphemy.
I thought he was born Yusuf. Didn't know he was for murdering that guy. Guess he's no different than Rob Reiner, Modonna, Depp, and all the rest of the crazies who call for the deaths of opponents.

Apparently he converted to Islam in 1978, which is earlier than I remember. I looked up what he actually said about Rushdie. wikijewdia has some interesting content about his life as a Muslim:

He released a statement the following day denying that he supported vigilantism and claiming that he had merely recounted the Islamic Sharia law punishment for blasphemy. Frankly, I never like either him or his music. I thought he was pompous, preachy, sanctimonious, and utterly humorless and his songs are uninspired. He was born in England and tried to pass himself off as a Briton, but his father was Cypriot. Stevens was originally named Steven Demetre Georgiou.
