I got family up there that asks me this stuff all the time. I see plenty of FB groups with stories specifically about ppl getting through the land borders by refusing questions and shit.
But when they fly the airports sound like they’re more forceful. Seen a few stories now of them just refusing to let people through until they get a phone or a relative to come and put the app on their phone to track them.
Either way, my curiosity here was that I think this is the only smart phone that you could put the app on to satisfy them, then just shut down the geo tracking ability and still use it as a phone.
The Communications Assistance for law Enforcement Act (CALEA) is a statute enacted by Congress in 1994 to require that telecommunications carriers and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment design their equipment, facilities, and services to ensure that they have the necessary surveillance capabilities to comply with legal requests for information. CALEA is intended to preserve the ability of law enforcement agencies to conduct electronic surveillance while protecting the privacy of information outside the scope of the investigation. In 2005, the Commission extended coverage of CALEA to include facilities-based broadband Internet access providers and providers of interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service.

Ya I almost did the same like 3 years ago. A bunch of people have got theres, and I would even wait a while cause I’m sick af of Apple/android but they can’t even give you a solid date and it looks like at least a year, maybe 2.
The tech stack from the handset hardware and firmware (below the OS) on up is all suspect. Even if you had a perfectly secure handset they record your voice print and translate everything you say to text and store it for later search and retrieval. If they want to listen to you live they can just set the system to listen for your voice print.
If you need to have a private conversation do it in person, outside, and away from any electronics.
Rather than spending > $500 for a privacy phone:
1) Don't discuss anything sensitive on any phone. 2) Buy cheap used feature phones off of Craigslist/eBay or at swap meets. 3) Go to a shitty part of town and pay some random street urchin to register the phone in their name pre-pay for 6 months. 4) Lather, rinse, repeat.

Contested tickets are being thrown out.
As a matter of fact, PHAC doesn't have the power to detain people, only CBSA does, so you can actually tell them to fuck off.
The more you know...

CALEA (federal law) requires wiretapping be built-in.
