I bought a townhouse in PA (closing in 3 weeks) that will be for me and my 70 year-old mother. I plan to put my mother there and in a few years, I will take the smaller bedroom.
I was detailing all the stuff she would need to do for a move and she told me she is scared:

I have a little. Here are some ideas and prices:
1. You’re going to need boxes, but not too many. Home Depot sells them in bulk. You can get maybe 30 regular ones and 10 heavy duty ones for heavier stuff like plates and picture frames. Boxes will cost about $90. You can crumple up newspapers to pack in and around plates and glasses.
2. Other stuff like your recliner and your table and other furniture will have to be wrapped with plastic. I didn’t price that, but it shouldn’t be too expensive.
3. You’re going to want to get at least 6 or 7 rolls of packing tape for the boxes.
4. Truck. U-Haul is short of trucks right now, but there is Budget, Pennske and other companies. You’ll probably need a 16-20 footer, which is a mid-sized truck that I believe can be driven with a regular license. To rent that, it is about $900. Someone would have to drive it probably 20 minutes back into the city or they can drive it back here, but I think that will cost more.
5. “They” means labor. You don’t have a big place or a lot of stuff, so you would likely need 2-3 guys. What would probably happen is that you’d have everything packed and wrapped the night before so that it would take like 2…2.5 hours to load the truck. The drive there is roughly 6 hours. The unload in PA is basically right to the front door. I would use the garage door, so it is not as hard, but they are going to have to get your bedroom furniture and clothes upstairs. It will be best to label the boxes with a marker beforehand so they know beforehand what is fragile (mirrors, etc.) and what goes where (Kitchen, Bedroom, Etc)
Where will you get the guys to do this and how will you pay them? I would advise against Craigslist. The type of people who usually do one-time “gigs” like this are cons, junkies and shitty hipsters who are conniving and untrustworthy. My advice would be to make an arrangement with 2-3 porters in your building to make some bread on their day off. You can pay them $400-$500 cash each (remember this is basically 12-14 hours of work where 4-5 will be pretty grueling—-then they’ll have to drive the truck back or drop it off.
A better, but more expensive option would be to use a professional moving company. They’ll have their own truck, but since the move is interstate, they’ll likely charge you about $4K-$5K and then you’ll probably want to have a $300-$400 tip for them when it is all done. However, then no one is in your business as to where you moved and no one has to return a truck.
How are YOU and the dog going to get there? An inexpensive way would be to take LIRR to Penn Station and then take the Amtrak from Grand Central, but can the dog behave that long? You might have to do a combination of cab and train. It will not be cheap. Amtrak out there is probably $120….a cab, if you could arrange such a thing, would probably be like $300. For your peace of mind , a straight cab ride out there where you can nap in the back and hit a rest stop or two may be the best option. When I was a mover 5 or 6 years ago, any move that went outside of the city had a foreman or a guy or two who drove their own cars to the job and followed the truck to the new home. You may be able to ride with them and give them some extra money.
You may just want to fly. Cab ride to JFK is like $60, I’d imagine and then the flight would be like $200 and take 1 hour. You can have your jewelry and important documents in a small, carry-on bag. I don’t know what the deal would be with the dog. Pretty sure he’d have to be in a pet cargo hold or something.

Day of moving - send kid and husband to help her pack the U-Haul, husband just got off of work but figured 2 hours max.
Nope 10 hours later. Because she hadn't even gotten the boxes. Nothing was done. But not only that because while she has two people starting to pack things for her now its all do everything delicately and don't go through my things!!!??
I heard the same words too the month before " I can't think about this stuff right now."
We have been discussing this for 2 months now. I guess she just thought a genie would magically pack and move all of her shit and that James T. Kirk would teleport her and the dog to the new place.
She was just resigned to the idea that she would just continue to lay $1850 rent on her social security income until the money my Dad left her was spent down to zero (in less than 4 years) and then she would figure something out. A complete lunatic.
What kills me is that I suggested that we find one of those half double houses one side us one side her and then things would be so much easier but nooo according to her we make too much noise and she cant stand the noise.
It's the same in the UK. My great-grandmother had dementia and lost the inheritance on the house by going into a care home. It's crippling seen as my grandparents now need to go into care too but they're mostly cognisant.
Pre-move - get rid of things that you don't need. Sell, throw-out, giveaway. The more you do this, the less you have to move with (lowers costs - space usage, fuel, etc)
1. boxes. Stores THROW THESE OUT, all the time. Go behind them and get what you need or just ask a friendly manager for them as you shop there. I've moved over 20 times, never paid for a box. Ask neighbors for old newspapers (and boxes) if you don't have enough. you can also use cloth and/or cardboard pieces to separate glass(dishes etc)just use some crumpled paper on the bottom/sides.
2 Wrap cardboard pieces on corners to protect furniture corners from dents, etc. They always get dinged up. Fragile stuff can get broken, even with a pro company. Move that yourself unless it doesn't matter. 3. That's a lot of tape. You must be moving quite a bit of boxable items.
4. Don't forget fuel costs and factor that in and you also need to bring it back with fuel or they charge extra. Also "budget" isn't always the cheapest truck around. IMPORTANT: Inspect the vehicle. Last time I moved they tried to hand me off vehicle with tire issues for a long trip.
5. Amtrak pet rules: https://www.amtrak.com/pets Flights are expensive now. Seems like they are 2 to 3x what they used to be just a few years ago. You are also risking yourself with clot shot pilots. I don't know the distance or routes you need to travel, so can't tell ya what to take. Sounds like NY to PA somewhere.

Imo, the way to do it is this: Don't try to make her move, invite her to stay the weekend. Then do it again and get her to bring more stuff. Eventually most of her stuff is in your new house and it's easier to move the rest than keep going home.
When I visited my father yesterday at our old house, he said something about nursing home. That's at least a decade away, if ever, but I promised him we'd never let him be treated unfairly or abused.
It's a disgrace when people leave their parents in those facilities, and don't make absolutely sure everything's alright and visit them often.
