He jumped the counter while the clerk was off to the side of the counter. There was no indication of a weapon or that they were going after the clerk. He RAN at the guy and stabbed him, which means if the thief had a gun it would be in his best interest to pull it out and shoot the clerk. The clerk wasn't "playing it safe".

See how fast shit can escalte, if the thief saw that the clerk is armed, why did he still try to start shit and if it was impossible for him to see that the clerk was armed despite standing 3 feet away, it also works the other way round, the thief could have had a knife on him too and may as well have used it against the man who at this point didn't do anything wrong.

Stealthing a candy bar is different than jumping around trying to take shit while nobody can predict how you react.

And yes the robber shooting the clerk would have been in the robbers self interest in the moment he saw someone coming at him with a knife, in court though that would only barely pass as self defense, as he was committing a crime while "defending himself".

Did the store owner react somewhat excessive? Maybe. Was he in the wrong? No.

I would have stayed back, as getting buttfucked by court fees isn't something I am into.
