Here is a long game chess strategy. Join the HOA committee. Slowly add TONs of egregious rules so everyone gets really frustrated. Circulate flyers about how over-the-top the association is, calling for the dissolution of the association. In other words, push the so far to the extreme, then help them over the cliff.
Another option is to get a bunch of like minded people onto the committee so you can overrule anything the retards come up with. Might be pretty easy as I'm guessing they have tons of rules already that many people hate but just live with.
HOA board are elected positions. Get a few people together and campaign on the basis of dissolving the HOA. If enough people in the neighborhood agree you can get the damn thing shut down.
Go buy your motorcycle, and see if they do anything about it. Instead of suing them, put them in the position of having to sue you, then claim some form of discrimination, or maybe even make an environmentalist claim about gas mileage. In practice, it sounds like a good idea. But you get Karen fucklords who put in shit like: Oh you can't have fences even 1 millimeter over X high. You can't build a fence out of any material that isn't on an approved list. You can't paint your house that color. Your trim pieces have to be within a certain level of contrast to your main colors. Your flowerbeds don't have the right distribution of colors. Your garden is X amount of inches too wide. No, no, no ENGLISH Yew trees cannot be planted in your backyard. They HAVE to be Irish Yew trees! You have to trim your hedges to be within X amount of width and height.
Basically a bunch of asinine, annoying rules. They also have the power to go to the city and have them write you legitimate legal fines and citations for not following the rules.

One guy it was because he wanted a full custom masonry fence which was going to cost him $50,000 alone and the HOA actually told him that "it just wouldn't fit the neighborhood's aesthetic" Another for wanting custom stained glass windows. All sorts of arbitrary bullshit. Have you ever gone to a neighborhood and thought "this place is really nice but every house looks the fucking same?" HOA is why.
You don't really have a choice to not join an HOA or at least follow their rules. The only way to avoid it is to just not buy a house/live in that neighborhood. Which isn't necessarily an option for some people. Also it doesn't stop HOAs from being formed right around you in a house you've already owned for years without one.
I would never live in a HOA neighborhood because I value freedom. However, I own two rental in a HOA and it’s great because the tenants have rules they have to follow. That combined with a strict management company I use, and I don’t have any tenant problems.
I thought about your question, duh, I’m stupid, yeah, rents got paid. The houses are in northern Arizona. Arizona is landlord friendly, not tenant friendly. They don’t play that shit down there. However, I only bought them a year ago, but it is in a somewhat affluent area.
Look at the by laws, where exactly does it say this? If it’s clear, you should have known that before you bought there. I was on our Board and kept them in check. They wanted to keep fining someone over $500 because of their mailbox needing painting. I’m like wtf are we doing, hire someone to paint it and send a bill. Problem quickly solved.
