Sadly, this appears to be true.

I'd like to think that there are at least a few organizations out there actually doing good work and I can't think of any offhand.

I've heard St. Judes and the Shiners are all right and I have no evidence or experience to confirm this.

You have to be a mason for a while before you can be a shriner. Or at least thats what the drunk dude in the arab hat told me at the BBQ gun raffle a few years ago.
