I light mine in the middle for double sparks, if I just want to wave it around.

But if I want to cursive write, ‘Hitler was right’ on a camera long exposure, then I light the tip.

What difference does it make? I used to light then from the top and bottom and they would burn toward the middle.

To some degree. Unfortunately the damn thing was tame because neighbours fed it.The sparklers seem to work but I got worried about starting a fire so stopped using them.

Possums eat ticks leave it alone. If you have to firecrackers would probably work better.
