I am the only person I've ever heard complain about people's houses and apartments that reek of dog piss. My one friend right now bought a puppy a year and a half ago, it pissed all over the carpet when it was a puppy and he never cleaned it up.
I've met countless people over the years who've done this. Does my smell work differently than everyone else's? Why would anyone leave that nastiness on their carpet?
Eh, what would you do? I soak it in nature's miracle and then blot it up with a real towel. Every so often you have the carpet cleaning guys out to deep clean it. Not sure what else you can do.
What do you buy? I have the Oreck thing. I didn't think it does a very good job though. Since I bought a house, I actually don't have carpet. I had several rentals in which there was carpet, and I used the carpet cleaner on them. Like I say, I still felt the need to have the guys out. It's not a matter of their skills. If they have to use the portable unit it's no better than the grocery store cleaner. If they actually use the one that's powered by the van motor, that's pretty good.
Bissell is what Mrs. Her0n prescribes, we haven't had carpet in years either though. I lay hardwood floor when I build a house, fuck nasty ass carpets.
Years before I met Mrs. Fascinus, I was dating a girl who had family in the city where she was planning to attend university.
I was invited to come along to visit the relatives.
The family bred little yippy dogs and the house was full of kennels.
I was warned ahead of time to expect adverse conditions and *nothing could have prepared me for the smell of that house. Years of fermented piss and dog shit tinged with the ever-present tang of cigar smoke.
The formerly shag carpets had, over time, become a nearly solid mass of carpet fiber and impacted, urine-soaked feces.
I remember vividly the sensation of my shoes sticking to the carpet. It felt like walking over a linoleum or laminate floor that had sticky juice spilled on it and left to dry.
Not having any way to readily nope out of the situation, I tried to make the best of it as I stuck it out for the better part of a week.
Finally got home in late evening and headed to bed. My Dachshund, evidently upset that I had the gall to abandon her, had vindictively pissed on the bed. She never* went in the house. This was clearly done to teach me a lesson.
"No problem", I thought. I still have the sleeping bag that I hadn't had occasion to use while on the trip.
Unrolled that sucker only to find that the yippy dogs had pissed all over it during my stay.
I'd replace carpet when my puppy was grown. If you've got a landlord, you can probably pay them to do it. They're used to doing it between tenants anyways.
If you bought expensive carpet, well, you're a dumbass. Replace it with something else.
IDK if you can really clean that from carpet. The truck mounted steam cleaning units are better than the grocery store versions, though, and the home versions are trash.
I dont' know that "everyone" does, but you can get used to smells in your own home. Like, I notice when I come back from vacation that my house smells funny. Not bad, but it's just inherently different from wherever I've been staying so you notice again. Every place smells like something.
Or, if you've been cooking fish, you dont' smell it, and then you go outside for a while, and then you come back in and you're like WTF? LOL

Costs less than paying some "professional" to come out and your house won't be nearly as nasty.
