Well, only cats born feral are feral. Cats that are abandoned become strays. They can survive, but without other people around to help them out they usually will die.
Yeah I've heard of cats eating rats, but never have seen it. I've heard they only go for the young ones. Mice and chipmunks are their specialty, also young rabbits and lizards.
