Went into this expecting it to be progressive, new-age communist bullshit. It's actually not terrible advice.

We do pretty much all of this apart from the bit about asking them how they felt when they did something that was hurtful to others (not to say that there isn't any potential merit with that idea).

We tend to focus more on how the behavior affected the aggrieved party, e.g. "When you threw the toy at Billy, that hurt his body and made him sad". That sort of thing. Edit: This is in addition to, not instead of punishment. Sort of like a debriefing.

Legitimately, the best decisions we've made for our children probably have a lot less to do with what we have done than what we haven't* done. No vaccines, no public school, etc.

I've actually used #1 on one of my nieces for years now. Everyone compliments her on how pretty she is and, knowing she has big-time daddy issues, I've always made an effort to compliment her on her behavior and achievements instead.

Time will tell if it makes much of a difference and I wanted her to have something to hang her hat on besides looks.

Teach them how to fight at a young age. Make them run, lift weights, swim, climb trees, etc. Being strong is fuckin GREAT!
