I noticed this newspeak in the news yesterday "two consecutive quarters of negative growth, which by some metrics in some countries is considered a recession." And thought it was weird but not as weird as the (Aussie) PM saying we would have negative growth, high interest rates, high inflation and no wage growth but they will start to improve at the end of 2023 and he was spinning it has a positive outlook and I'm just thinking 'how can he try and spin an economic depression as a good thing, why, because it will end?'

I don't recall who said it or if it was even accurate, but at least two months ago I heard it explained that, historically, recessions last 13 months and recovery takes about 24 months.

For a while now, the notion of "a recession" (and "a depression") as a single event has been quite useless specifically due to nitpicking.

If the number was negative then the economy receded. Reports should just track by how much and for how long, and let the reader judge it from there.
