You can also launch a bottle- or model- rocket and see how high it goes. It's not at all implausible to think that ambitious people could build a bigger version that could lift people up at least as high a commercial jet.

You can also consider that pressure builds if you dive down 10 ft into a swimming pool because of the weight of the water above you. Some settling of contents may occur. It makes sense that the atmosphere would also get thinner as you continued upward.

Showcase a bottle/model rocket launch in which the rocket takes forever to launch from the pad and achieve high speeds. Every single model/bottle rocket achieves maximum velocity practically instantly. Except for Nasa/spacex/china/russias fake ones
