It took quite a few years to scare straights into AIDS - that was a project stemming from around 1989 whereas AIDS (GRID) emerged first in the early 80's. People didn't care because they knew it was a fag disease spread by degenerates and after a few years they launched PR to make straight people fear it. By around 1992 stats came out showing that it was 100x more common for gays and straight people returned to not giving a shit. The only group that saw an increase was black women, which led to the entire conversation around "the downlow" aka black men being gay in secret.
