They were christian nations that were populated by people who were biblically illiterate, they only got their knowledge of their own religion from the priests and preachers who were giving quotations and holding services that were motivated more by the needs of the political class than by anything else, the bible was just a prop that was occasionally referred to in selective fashion for the sake of propagandizing a population into compliance with the plans of their leaders.

They condoned various sexual practices that you would consider to be anti-christian today, like pedophilia and homosexuality, what was important to them was that they had their children be married and produce offspring, with a very strong preference for the partner which they had selected for their child to wed to be the other parent to their offspring.
