Be realistic about living off-grid

submitted by Nozyedys to TellTalk 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 05:52:31 ago (+67/-0)     (TellTalk)

I've done the off-grid thing and now have a semi off-grid house with a productive little permaculture garden in the middle of nowhere. By semi off grid I have no dependence on gas or water, only electricity and that's free because my solar feeds back into the grid and credits my account.

Things to like are the clean air, clean water (from the roof so no fluoride), no crime, nature is everywhere (love fishing and swimming in the rivers), good food because we buy meat locally then cook at home and we get tons of exercise and I haven't stopped learning new things in years. I don't think there is anyone that lives in town who isn't white. Not even Asians or Indians.

Anyway now to the bad part, for the first few years pretty much every spare minute outside of my work, sleep and garage gym was spent doing some sort of labour.

It is constant. If you are doing it by yourself and have a full time job that's not from home you will really struggle to get anything done. You will fix one thing then another thing will need fixing. You'll weed one part of the garden and before you get to the next the weeds are back in the weeded part. You will need tons of tools and equipment, it's not cheap at first. If you're in a cold area you will probably need lots of wood too. And unless your friends and family are into this stuff you will spend a lot of time by yourself.

I'm not saying don't do it, but just start off small if you do. It's not as easy as those people on YouTube make it appear to be. Try to find help where possible (especially from farmers) and choose the right property to begin with. If it's already established you will save yourself so much time and money.

Tell yourself "what can I do first that will reduce the amount of labour required in the future" and do that first.

And don't get stuck analysing things on YouTube just decide what you need to do and start doing it. One example, everyone on YouTube says that woodchips are a great mulch. Sure if they get delivered to your house but if you have to pick them up then suddenly they are a pain in the arse and a ton of back breaking labour to move them around because they are heavy. Instead you could get a cheap hay bale and use that as a mulch instead.

Anyway I'm really happy with what we've done here (it's not super special but I it's a beautiful mix of comfort and nature) and it has been a fulfilling experience. Just be realistic about it if you decide to go down this path. If you have to work a lot there's nothing wrong with having an established house on the grid, you can still install a water tank and a greenhouse and things like that in the suburbs and not make it a life-long mission.

And a reminder to everyone learn how to use your cistern.

I'm going to make you laugh nozyedys go ahead and call me a retard.

When we had to rely on ours usually my husband would turn it on.

I mean he showed me but really like I was going to pay attention?

He wasn't around I needed water so I go outside to turn it on and then I'm done so I go to turn it off. I got confused and then second guessed myself. Ok I'm sure I pulled the lever in the correct position.

Husband later realizes there is water in road. It didn't rain what's going on?

Hours. I left it on for hours and didn't notice a pipe had loosened ( pvc)

He ran outside turned it off I ran up to the roof opened the lid and fucking a maybe 4 gallons left.

My aunt who lived down the road when I told her about it said she was wondering where the water came from and laughed because somebody was further down collecting it.

So she told me who hahaha had my water but fuck.

Im laughing now but back then absolutely pissed and freaking out.

I started out by growing food in buckets to see if I liked it. Now I have an almost fully self sufficient homestead. I've automated so much along the way and it really helps, but what you mentioned about using affordable haybales to mulch instead of wood chips is how this ordeal is meant to be done.

[ - ] Thatguy 4 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 07:17:10 ago (+4/-0)

Any advice on how to grow food out of buckets. I’d like to dive into that.

[ - ] Her0n 17 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 07:34:10 ago (+17/-0)*

Easiest step by step.

Get HDPE plastic buckets ONLY, all others make your food toxic. Iirc the number code is 2.

Drill drainage holes in buckets.

Buy "organic" dirt if you don't have good topsoil you can use.

Don't use chemical fertilizers, it kills the enzymes in the plants that you need.

Plant according to the plants needs.

Keep you plants in as much sun as possible and keep them watered well.

Bonus shit:

If you keep them inside, lay down a tray under the plants.
There is no winter inside your house, if you get enough sun through your windows then try it sometime.
You can move buckets around, move your plants each day to maximize sun time.
Water in the morning, before the sun is up. Water and sunlight is needed to photosynthesize, if you water them at night, they have no sun to make gluclose.
The best fertilizer is natural compost, you can buy a small tumbler online for less than 100USD, fill it with every non-protien food you don't eat.
Nitrogen is the most common nutrient to lack.
Get a growing guidebook that illustrates what the different leaf conditions mean.

[ - ] Thatguy 3 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 07:37:35 ago (+3/-0)

I’m going to try this.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 13:21:43 ago (+0/-0)

Where do you stand on bread in the compost?

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 16:54:57 ago (+1/-0)

I don't ever have leftover bread with my animals. I would have to research that before I'd give my take on it.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 17:10:13 ago (+0/-0)

The Internet is mostly against it because of the yeast, but some still advocate for it.
Have no personal experience with it though.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 17:42:53 ago (+0/-0)

This year may be the last year I buy bread and I'm excited about it.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 21:37:34 ago (+0/-0)

Sounds like you’ve made good off grid progress.

[ - ] xmasskull 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 19:44:10 ago (+0/-0)

Leftover bread? what's that?

There are way to many recipes that you can use bread in-Bread pudding is one of thousands.

[ - ] Psychicrussiaspy 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 21:38:00 ago (+0/-0)

Also if I may ,use white buckets as colored ones get hot in the sun and roots don't like it.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 22:16:10 ago (+0/-0)

That's true, I have some blue and some white at my friend's site. I'll see if he's had any differences.

What? It's essential for a plants growth.

I get nitrogen from cover crops and compost. In emergencies I use a ten to one ratio of water and human pee.

I agree, I live in south east QLD, Australia on 100 acres and a lot of the city slickers only last two years. Unless you’re a millionaire you’re not going to be able to afford to pay someone to fix your mower, fix your plumbing, wire new lights in your shed or cut your firewood. You need to be adaptable.
Fear of failure is a big thing that holds people back. You’re better off to just commit and give it a go, there is no other way to learn.
Most people are incredibly naive when it comes to living off grid. Having solar with a battery backup has heaps of drawbacks, especially when there are lots of lightening storms.
By a property that is connected to mains power, the solar panels and wind turbines can come later.
Buy good quality water tanks, expensive but a great investment.
You can start growing your food today, you don’t need to live in the sticks to have a veggie patch. Also, if your gardens are near your house and you put out tons of wood chips every termite in the forest is going to make your backyard home, once they finish with the wood chips they will start on your house (this is true in QLD, not sure elsewhere)
Take up hunting and fishing as a hobby, sustainable meat sorted. Goats, sheep and pigs are also good because they’re small enough to kill and butcher by yourself without mechanical aids.
I was born in the bush so for me there is no other way to live, I’d rather be dead than live in a city. I spend my free time hunting pigs with dogs or stalking deer. If you’re thinking of moving to the bush I’d recommend it, hard work pays offs, don’t give up.

"If you have to work a lot there's nothing wrong with having an established house".

Reminds me a bit of when me and the missus bought the shack over three hours away from our city pad. I was working and had only the week-end to mow lawns, clean roof gutters and ... enjoy ourselves at the beach.

The little ol' lady next door had other ideas. Namely we were to give up an hour a day to listen to her bang on about whatever she wanted - usually her health conditions. I don't own a firearm and I don't consider myself a violent man but...

[ - ] ForgottenMemes 2 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 13:24:56 ago (+2/-0)

Reminds me of a quote I don't know the attribution to: "The best programmers are lazy programmers."

Great post! I like these semi-short ones instead of writing a novel all at once to follow. Also, even if you think something is stupid and obvious, city slickers like me might be clueless, so post those thoughts as well if you are bored.

Thanks!

If you end up going solar with batteries, use cheap used EV batteries. People take them out to replace them and sell them for pretty cheap on a per kwh basis. I see stuff like 8kw batteries for $300 from older first gen EVs with plenty of life left in them for stationary use if you're handy enough to hook up some cooling lines when required or pull apart the units to cool them ambiently.

[ - ] SteppingRazor 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 13:40:04 ago (+1/-0)

I don’t want to live off grid, just far away from people and raise some food.
My hope is all the city folk that moved to the country the past two years soon find it is too much work and move back. Remote work has caused the outer areas to be bought up like crazy.

[ - ] Nozyedys [op] 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 19:26:29 ago (+0/-0)*

Yeah it has. When we bought this property it wasn't unusual for a property to be on the market for a year or two. Now they get snapped up immediately and when a new one hits the market I will start to see luxury cars driving around the neighbourhood as they come up from the city to inspect the house.

I take the ash from my fireplace and put that around the garden. There's always lumps of charcoal still in it. I don't bury it though (extra work).

[ - ] CHIRO 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 08:41:05 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, I like to think you earn your way off the grid, you don't just decide one day to pull the plug. Of course, it's possible for someone to do it very quickly, but as you've said it requires fairly high up-front cost. Not to mention the know-how that someone, who doesn't have it yet, will have to gain with time and error. If you don't know what you're doing, it could easily overwhelm someone at first.

It is better to start small and work your way toward total self-sufficiency, picking up the necessary equipment and things along the way.

[ - ] albatrosv15 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 08:21:50 ago (+1/-0)

When people want to live in the country, the "solar panel" thing is mentioned very early. I would advise against it. It's way more important to optimize the workload around your house than doing solar panels. Besides, city people are very careless about stuff and break a lot of things. I have installed solar panels on a house(not professional) and when i visited them next year, those solar panels were broken and cracked, lying by a fence.

[ - ] knightwarrior41 1 point 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 07:36:12 ago (+1/-0)

good for those that can do it. i personally dislike living in the forest or in the country. i cant stand the stale nature of all of it.

for the record, i used to live in the countryside during the pre internet era. and for me it was a shitty experience because of the bugs, the boredom and the fact that everything around you was the same people, the same hills, the same animals etc etc

so these days i live outside the city, in the suburbs which is nice since you can have a mixture of modern and that old small town life.

now i miss the hills somewhat since i live in florida but i have no regrets since am living in a better place from the shithole that i lived from the pre internet era.

i do have respect for the people that live in the countryside.it takes guts to live that way. personally its not for me.

to each its own i guess

Thanks for your post. Good to see honestly when it comes to this. We moved from the mountains (but still to close to neighbors) to lots of acreage and no neighbors far, far away in a different state. It has been quite a learning curve with a different climate and altitude for growing. Also different equipment. Different wildlife. Agree that it's a constant work in progress of the property (it was quite neglected) to fixing plumbing, electrical, truck/ utv engines. We use a solar panel for our gate. It has worked out so far, but wouldn't use solar for much else.

[ - ] oldblo 0 points 1.8 yearsJul 27, 2022 11:13:01 ago (+0/-0)

If you are having a problem with a particular patch of soil constantly growing weeds maybe you could try covering the area with a black tarp and letting it bake in the sun.

Check if your image has meta data (like location):

Follow these directions to remove meta data:

Re-check with the first site to insure meta data is gone.
