This has happened to me before and regardless of being the top performer, I was passed up 3 times for a promotion and I had to quit in order to move up
[ - ] osomperne [op] 1 point 2.8 yearsJul 26, 2022 20:05:24 ago (+1/-0)*
I was hired for 1 of the positions specifically, but they pulled a switcheroo by saying they were trying to train me from the ground up (which was highly on demand). And when they saw me doing stuff that most people never did due to how error prone the job was and the high cost for error they just kept me there.
They never answered anyone straight when people asked what they needed to do, so even if that was in play the answer doesn't matter.
Near as I could tell they were giving jobs to people for government grants as well.
On a separate note, the white male bosses I had were almost exclusively about 90 IQ and it was a problem. Consistently (I mention this because they tried HARD to hire diversity hires)
It sounds like this was the last place you had to quit? Unclear from your response.
You might feel defensive when I say this but you need to get better at having these types of conversations with employers. They knew exactly what they were doing and they were blowing smoke up your ass to keep you in a position you didn't want. Nobody is ever "too good at their job to promote or reward"
Here's a better way to respond to the runaround they gave you
I don't want to be hired for the other position. I'm happy to go through a training period if I'm hired on for the position I want.
Also not getting a straight answer is usually a straight answer that means "not gonna happen" because otherwise you would get a straight answer. Your gut told you this at the time. Learn to trust it. Lots of people who seem friendly and even genuinely like you are not honest and don't mind using you.
My advice is to always do your best at work, because that builds you up as a man. Ask for the promotions you want, and if you're not seeing growth where you are find somewhere better. Go in with a strong sense of what you want and be polite but firm about getting it. Know what compromises you're willing to make going into it too, and walk away when they demand too much.
You have to really shift your thought process if this feels uncomfortable, but it will serve you well.
I disagree about the being good at the job and not being promoted part. I had the best performance of anyone there, with the exception of 1 guy as I was leaving. They wanted be there because of what I mentioned previously
I'm not going to argue because I wasn't there, but it doesn't change anything and that mindset doesn't help you get what you want. And by that I just mean that it's a mostly irrelevant detail. From what you've described I don't think they would have promoted you no matter your performance. Do you agree with that part?
From what you've described I don't think they would have promoted you no matter your performance. Do you agree with that part?
Partly I agree. I'm conjecturing that had I performed a bit less well they'd have promoted me. Unless the plan the whole time was to stick me in that spot. Re read the op if you need to refresh on the situation

It's this way in every field. A friend of mine was on the hiring committee for a position at his job and he told me that they were using a points system. Across various qualifiers, candidates were given a score and whoever got the highest score overall would get the job.
He told me that blacks got points added to their score automatically, as did lgbtq or other minorities.
They put it in the context of giving a boost to poor minorities, but what they are actually doing is penalizing white men. A black fag could have a higher overall score than a white man even if the white man did better than everyone else across every field. It's outrageous
I'm also in the same situation constantly. Any job I do, regardless of the type of job, and I've had many...I naturally optimize my performance and am quickly doing it better than the people who have been their longer than me.
For some reason, higher ups don't think "Huh..creativity is really good at this job, I wonder how he'd do at other "higher level" jobs?"
I think I just need to literally explain to them, "Look, you saw how I did at this job...now imagine if I applied the same work ethic and performance improvements to a higher level position. How much more could I add to the company if you put me in a position that was more important to the company?"
Idk...sometimes I think they can't make that mental jump and they think "We know he's good at this position, we don't know how he'll be at other ones, best to keep him there, why risk it?"
I can tell them why to risk it, "If after my explanation of why you should consider me for a better position, you don't...I'll leave. I've done it before."
Honestly though, this situation that you and I find ourselves in shouldn't exist. If you do well at one position, you absolutely should be considered for better ones if the company is looking for the best people. But clown world is going to clown, and this is just one example of why our entire society is going down in flames...That's why I don't take it personally anymore. We're in a failing society...successful people will struggle in that situation.
The company I work for now (that I'm quitting at the end of this week) has had positions open in 3 other departments and despite regularly applying for them they keep hiring mooks from out of company that leave immediately anyways.
If you show any level of initiative, especially at lower level work, they keep you there forever because finding a good replacement drone is hard.
It's true. And that was part of my motivation to quit. The company definitely lost out by me quitting. Their productivity was cut at least in half for that work, and once some schmuck gets in there and makes a few mistakes they're fucked out of half my years salary with 1 or 2 errors.
Doesn't sound like anyone specified this yet, but if you are doing a great job and don't get the recognition, one way to advance is to go contract.
Not all employers do it, or even would entertain the idea, but give them a couple options - either meet your demands or you quit and will become a contractor. Specify exactly what the job is and for what time period, etc. When the contract is up, if they want to keep you they will need to meet your new demands.
Contract work should be at a premium to your regular pay, because you will have to pay a lot of taxes, etc, yourself. I have seen people go to 3x their salary as contract, but that can be very rare.
I did not intend it to be abrasive, just blunt. Success working for someone else will require sacrifice. I define success as making well above average salary. Too much devotion required at the expense of your family. Anything below that level is servitude. I would rather make enough to get by on my own than slightly better being a slave. I have had to work for others in the past, as soon as I was able I jumped to working for myself.

You think I'm being a bitch but it's happened to my husband where a lead position opened up and he put in for it.
He was already basically the lead so he should've been right in there.
They wanted the black guy. When the black guy said he didn't want it they offered it to the disabled white woman.
Black guy said he would quit if she became lead so they took away the position.
It's bullshit.
