It's such a unique kind of pain, but it is the most useful kind to experience. It's so painful because, whether it comes from an old person, or a child (much more often in my experience), we know it is unfiltered honesty. Both children and old people forego - because of stubbornness or ignorance - the kinds of insecure social limitations we apply to ourselves. Don't get me wrong, it is a generally good thing that in-between aged folks do this.

But kids and old fucks don't. So they are liable to spit straight truth. And the feeling is like being caught in a lie, like light getting shone on something you were hiding. Now you also realize that what this person said is also what others (probably) think, but lie to you about. And you feel like a fraud suddenly, with respect to everybody you know, since you also realize they've been playing pretend with you.

Kids and old fucks burst our bubble, but it's like God punching you in the gut. Pay attention to it. If a kid calls you fat, you're fuckin fat. Lose some weight.

My parents named me Shannon, ‘cause we’re Irish’. It’s rough having a girls name. Long ago it was an Irish man’s names that got switched up along the way. We’ve been in Texas, fighting Indians and Mexicans and Yankees since 1740. I’m as Irish as I am Martian.
