Nah, this isn't an EV problem. It's a grid problem. If you are connected to the grid, you are just as fucked.

I was explaining this to family just a few weeks ago. I live in Quebec where we produce electricity cleanly, using water. As a result, people are excited at the prospect of driving cleanly by using this power. However, there are several problems:

1) Our climate is cold and range is compromised during the winter. The demand for electricity is clearly going to peak then and the grid might not be able to provide if everyone is using such a car in addition to heating their homes electrically.

2) Every home has a number of electronics which drain electricity. They also use air conditioning during the humid summers and electric panels during the cold winters. Add the electric car with its electric charge station and the grid won't be able to produce enough power for everyone unless new plants are built.

3) Hydroelectricity is through the use of powerful water sources like strong rivers or falls... most of which are located on Native land. Either people will have to use less electricity or the government will have to build plants which produce electricity through other means like oil, coal or nuclear.

4) EV batteries are made of lithium. To extract lithium, you have to flood surrounding areas destroying the environment and the resource is only extracted in select areas of the world for the time being. They don't produce enough of the material NOW and won't be able to keep up with demand later.

The problem is serious and the governments of the world know that their push for these kinds of vehicles make no sense. The true solution is either cars based on hydrogen or to convert existing cars to ones where hydrogen is added to the fuel, ensuring that 100% of the fuel os burned to limit pollution and to increase range ten-fold.

And here we have Ford laying off around 10k employees so they can focus more on electric vehicles.

Do not under any circumstances buy a car that you can fuel without spending money, paying the government tax, or big corporates profits.

Whatever you do. Don't get an EV and solar / wind / hydro...

Just keep relying on the fuel source the government totally controls for all your movement needs

Electric vehicles are great, but they only work well with fusion. There is no profitable fusion yet, so EV's are a net loss no matter how you look at it.....
