How did they use their hands if they were holding a spear? Did they just use one hand to cup less than a mouthful at a time? Doesn't seem too bright to me, better to swallow a couple gulps and be back on your feet in 10 seconds. If they could see the horizon, they had plenty of advance warning of incoming enemy.
I get the attempted message, but if they are in an area flat enough that the people at the river could see the horizon, that level of caution borders on cowardice. It takes 3 seconds to pick up your spear and stand, and 5-10 minutes at full sprint for someone at the horizon to reach you. The only logical reason someone would keep hold of their spear is if they feared attack from the other soldiers with them. Was that the message, Trust No One? When somebody sits next to a normal person on the train, they think nothing of it. When somebody sits next to a thief, they think "I would only sit so close to a person if I was going to try to steal something", and hold their valuables closer. Someone who was always suspicious of, and feared attack from, their brothers-in-arms is the person most likely willing to attack them. Was Gideon looking for soldiers that wouldn't hesitate to kill one another? I mean, at the end of the day they were all jews, so I suppose not trusting any of them would be a wise move.
I know, I am just giving him shit for quoting a TV show instead of the bible. In the actual story nobody is holding a spear or looking at the horizon, the only difference is using 2 cupped hands or laying down. Rivers are lower than surrounding areas, so you can only see riverbank, not horizon.

I've met plenty of retarded military members, they would be useless in a combat situation. They're useless in normal situations...
