Where did pirates got their flags from?

Pirates had cool skull & bones flags. As far as I know you need some tools to make these flags. I'm wondering where did pirates got their flags from? It' was easy to get arrested for ordering this flag from normal people.

They made them. They had everything they needed on the ship: needles for fixing sails, shitload of rope, and extra cloth. Not to mention a lot of boring free time.
If not that, they had islands in the carribean that were friendly to pirates (so they could have ordered one to be made). Look up Henry Morgan and read Jack London's The Sea-Wolf.

They ordered them online and had them sent in discreet packaging via pony express.

Not to mention how they acquired those 200 ton ships with heavy cannons. One would think the authorities would have arrested the scallywags at the point of sale.

I'm no expert, but a lot of pirates started off as privateers under protection of their respective governments.

Different captains and different ships had their own flags. The archetypal "skull and crossbones" flag wasn't the only one, and it wasn't even that common. Here's a list of various flags flown by some. Note #10 is Bartholomew Roberts, who was called "the dread pirate Roberts" in some silly movie. Yes, he was real.

All sailor back then mended their own clothes and repaired sails. They had lots of time on their hands on long boring voyages and they were skilled at all domestic chores. It would have been easy and quick to dye some canvas and whip up a flag. They could pull into a unpopulated bay in the new world, saw a tree down and put in a new mainmast if needed. Just think of the size of the sail canvas, where do you think that came from?

Imagine rolling into some bay during high tide knowing the water will leave and you'll be "dry docked" to fix your ship. It's like watching the Amish do something today, except with more colorful language.

The first recorded uses of the skull-and-crossbones symbol on naval flags date to the 17th century. It possibly originated among the Barbary pirates of the period, which would connect the black colour of the Jolly Roger to the Muslim Black Standard (black flag) [Library Service]
