May of them work in these firms in order to get status points for being do-gooders. In the past, when they told people they worked at the CDC or NIH those people were impressed. Now, they get a colder reaction. The result is they no longer get the ego/status boost from their job, and so they are looking for something else that provides that.

tl;dr: it's no longer considered cool to work at these places and the type of people who work there only do it for the cool points in their social circle.
