Listen to music without drums. Bluegrass keeps rhythm with stand-up bass and mandolin chuck. I've been really enjoying the "Punch Brothers" lately, but there's plenty of other fantastic drumless modern music in that genre.

That's a really good suggestion. Bluegrass can't be played with percussion or else it loses its heart and its expressiveness.

There is Sturgeon's Law, which states 90% of everything is crap. With that in mind, the music in every decade is going to have a lot of crappy songs as musical styles change and people's musical preferences change. The music in the 70s and 80s was mostly dreadful, as pop transitioned into glam, then into disco and punks responded with anti-music. When low-cost synthesizers became available, there was a decade of horrible synthesizer bands and their over-processed music.

But if I understand your point, rock drumming tends to overwhelm music and focus too much attention to itself. At least that's how it sounds to me. And I find it annoying as hell.

The other problem with modern music is that there is no real musicianship left. It's all formulaic and by the numbers. Nothing is surprising or interesting any longer.

We don't tend to hear even 10% of music written and recorded because so much of it is obscure crap. Lots of amateurs on soundcloud and YouTube that rightfully get filtered out.

If you haven't already, give Queens of the Stone Age a try. They're a real rock band. Eery musician sits down and rethinks their career choices when they hear them live.

this is the current state of "music evolved by white people since 4500 years ago":

Can I suggest just tuning in to the music I post? The ViciousMrPim said I had appalling taste in music but he would, wouldn't he - horrid little millenial that he is who doesn't pay enough attention to his personal hygiene!

Check out a band called gnome.

Give prog rock a try. Much less boxed in. Just make sure you know if a band is full of masonic magicians before you get too deep in.

The snare drum is one of my favorite instruments, as it has a very unique and cool sound. The particular Radiohead song you used as an example is undoubtedly shit. Because the whole thing is basically a mindless loop. But to be so audacious as to say "the past 60 years has been music for retards" is one of the most mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, smooth-brained boomer things you could have possibly said. If you're going to jump to moronic hyperbole, don't expect anything else in response.

For every artist that puts actual thought and care into how they use each instrument, how they complement each other, how they can tell a story with their music, etc. There are a dozen retards who slap shit together that they think sounds amazing in their drug/alcohol induced stupor.

Edit: With all that out of the way, historically and practically, drums are used to maintain a beat. They're always the most formulaic instrument in any piece of music. Everything else is built off of the beat.
Try listening to any piece of music where the drums are off-beat from everything else, or where the drums don't set a proper beat at all. The discordance is literal murder on your ears.

Radiohead is a really bad example of modern music anyways. They've been irrelevant for 15+ years. Modern music is the same nonstop, uninspired, digital drum loops. With shitty overly sexual, violent, or just disgusting lyrics put on top of it.

Try listening to actual modern music and see if you can even tell the songs apart, or that they're made/sung/whatever by different artists. In most cases, you can't. (I think right now only 7 people write 90% of the music that comes out of the Jewish music industry)

But even then there are still gems that you can find. No genre is truly dead and with the advent of the internet, you can find things that you enjoy. Even if they aren't from genres you typically consider yourself a fan of. Sometimes it may take more or less effort. Results may vary.

But I bet I could find you a few examples if you told me what you actually liked.

FYI; orchestral music isn't dead either and never has been. You can find LOADS of it plastered all over the internet. Not to mention orchestral music that borrows modern technology like synths, electric guitars, etc. Mashes them all together. Music is an ever evolving medium.

I was combating your shit hyperbole with shit hyperbole and sarcasm. I never disagreed with you - not wholly. Even the last 20 years is still a massive over statement. People still regularly make great music today. Just because it's not on the radio doesn't mean it doesn't exist and isn't getting made.
Even then, there's still a rare enjoyable track that comes out of the mainstream crap once a year or so.
