Baumeister warns that we don't have the ability to deal with negativity on social media, because our brain evolved to heed warnings from a close community of hunter-gatherers instead of hundreds or thousands of strangers. "So, hearing negative things from a large number of people has to be devastating," he says.

We remember criticism longer than praise because we survive by changing what we did wrong. First, we pay attention to the criticism, then we think on it, then we formulate a plan, then we change.

Criticisms are the things that keep people alive.

"Don't eat that!" "Don't touch that!" etc.

And remembering these are what lead to long term survival.

Ouch. My self-esteem is wounded. I feel rejected. Worthless. Shunned. i.e. business as usual.
