Those crappy bodegas aren't immune to people stealing shit, that's not why. There are a bunch of reasons why grocery stores don't make it in the inner cities; people not knowing how to cook, people not having time to cook, people not having a stove in their apartment, people only wanting to eat crap and not healthy food, high rents requiring high prices on goods, busy streets making daily deliveries of fresh produce difficult... It all adds up.

I've visited grocery stores in the middle of Japanese megacities. None of those excuses holds water in the modern era, each thing can be solved even in the inner cities. You are also overlooking the fact that a large portion of the crap in a grocery store is pre-made, packaged and overly processed garbage that takes exactly zero cooking skills to "make".

Foot traffic was fairly normal, for Japan anyways. Not too crowded for me, though there were no niggers and spics around, only the very polite Japs.

The one store I went to was quite large actually, both in terms of height and in ground area. The first two floors were groceries, the next one was misc healthcare stuff (soap, razors, etc) the next was an arcade/toystore, the one after a uhhh... Clothing store? Something like that, it's been a good long while and that place might not even exist anymore. Restaurants were on top, so you could look out on the city while eating.

grocery stores don't make it in "inner cities" because the clientele are disgusting, theft is off the charts, the staff you hire from the neighborhood will be in on the theft, and the customers only eat bags of chips and sugar water anyway. go to any inner city neighborhood where the people aren't black and you'll find functioning grocery stores.

First off, there are grocery stores in nyc. Almost as big as the ones in the suburbs. You just need to know where to go and sometimes they will not be in walking distance. In nice areas they can be ealking distance but definitely no in shit hole bronx.
