I think that the group of priests who ruled over the hebrews decided to make their god the only god so that they could elimininate other priests who were competing for power or offerings. So that was originally El or Ba’al or whatever. But when they saw an opportunity to gain new followers they would say ”oh your god is really our god, but you have to worship him through us.“ so they sold their god to the egyptians as Set and they sold him to the midianites as yahweh. No one calls god yahweh until moses goes to the land of the midianites, whose primary god is yahweh. And then they sold him to the greeks as zeus.
That mostly makes sense to me except for the Zeus part. Is that based on anything or speculation?
I know the jews were mixed up with the Greeks but I didn't think they had much sway over their religion and the Greek pantheon seems to have way more in common with the other European religions.
Zeus aka Theos aka Deus are all names in various greek dialects for an indo-european god worshipped across europe. The early christians such as the gospel writers were hellenized jews and used Deus, I think, but I think this was a choice. I do not think it was typical to call the hebrew god deus before christ and I think jesus himself used El. And using greek and not aramaic was a choice too I suppose.
Greek was the lingua franca in the east since the alexandrian conquest.
Aye, shit. It's a lot. Let's see... the woefully inadequate summary that is going to leave you with more questions than it answers is:
Nebuchadnezzar took them captive, killed all of their artisans, politicians, scholars, etc. and destroyed their texts, books, etc. because that it is how you destroy a culture without killing the people. After being held for however many years and having been exposed to the Babylonian religions and rituals constantly, forced to participate, they were finally released. They wanted to rewrite their "biblical" texts but no one remembered anything (because Neb killed them all) so they took nearly wholesale from Babylonian mythos which is why the Biblical creation story perfectly (and I do mean perfectly) mirrors the Enuma Elish, day for day and tablet for tablet. The Babylonian gods were condensed into four letters: JHWH except Hebrew doesn't have an equivalent for J hence "Y"... YHWH... yahweh. This is the Tetragrammaton the article speaks of (Tetra meaning "four") which was adopted into Kabbalism as "the ineffable name of God." The character Yahweh is an amalgamation of four deities.
So when you dig into that jewish story about the golem, you'll see SO many references to alchemy and Babylonian shit. This is why.
What is known as Yahweh is the merging of Aton the sun god and Jahve the volcano god by Moses as a way merge the two tribes of the way to the promised land. The Midianites killed him anyway.
