I think I fucked up.

submitted by PeckerwoodPerry to whatever 2.9 yearsJun 29, 2022 11:47:22 ago (+11/-0)     (whatever)

Accidentally sliced a piece of meat off the top knuckle of my left thumb. The wound is healing up rather nicely, but I've been getting a burning sensation from my thumb up to my elbow when I use it too much. I think I must have severed a nerve. My health insurance kicks in in about a week, so I'm going to have to go to a doctor. If I did what I think, I'm going to need surgery or I'll lose the use of my thumb. Anyone here have any experience with this?

Yeah. I'm up for some gore.

Let's see this train wreck

Nah. It'll just feel fucked up for awhile.

I wouldn't even expect a doctor to be of any help with that; they never are.

I sliced the pad of my right thumb off, I was cutting a pvc pipe with a knife, it went through it like butter and got my thumb. Just before I had to go to work. I put the piece back in place, wrapped it in gauze and went to work. Later in the day someone pointed out to me that I was dripping blood. Went to the ER. They irrigated the wound (very painful) and sewed the piece back on. It’s numb to this day but my thumb is complete. The ER doc said it was smart to put the piece back in place but dumb to wait so long to get it treated.

Yes. https://files.catbox.moe/7i2d7j.jpg

If it's just the nerve, you'll still be able to use your thumb. It's when you sever a tendon that stuff stops working. And yeah, they inserted a section of nerve from a corpse into that hole, but it didn't take, probably because it was two weeks until I finally had the surgery.

It's just super sensitive to touch a year and a half later, but it all still works. Luckily missed everything but that nerve.

A bit over 1.5 inches deep, btw.

Yeah Ive heard of them using cadaver tissue to repair nerves in similar situations. I suspect that the cadavers could be aborted fetuses, but that’s just a guess.

I fucked up one of my fingers in an accident and I don’t have a lot of sensation there anymore, its a minor nuissance.

From what I understand, nerve damage can be degenerative. Without going into too much detail, my wife is a medical therapist that deals specifically with this kind of thing daily. Based on what she's told me and what I've read there's cause for concern.

Consider waiting a week because if you come in with it semi-healed they day your policy starts they may challenge coverage because the incident obviously occurred before it kicked in. Good luck

At least take a round of anti-biotics or colloidal silver.

When I sliced the top of my finger with a mandolin the nail and a patch of skin the doctor just put a gauze on it. Hopefully that's all that will need.

He said there was nothing they coukd really do since it was an awkward spot.

If you have to go to the hospital without insurance I don't know where you live but I know there is a program for those that fall in between too poor for insurance and make too much for welfare. But the time that form comes through your insurance should have kicked in and then covers it. Usually though the amount ends up being 0.00.

I wish you luck.

Do you like mandolins?

I play mandolin. She's talking about a vegetable slicer. Real knuckle busters.

Never seen a mandolin look that cool. Good for him!

He actually killed himself recently.

Never ever hurt myself with the meat slicer though.

Mandoline I meant mandoline slicer. Ugh. I know you got all excited there with your fantasy.

I sliced it about two weeks ago, not really worried about the wound. It's already scarring up. I'm just experiencing pain that can't be justified by a small cut unless there's nerve damage.

That sucks, man.

Get it checked out as early as possible.

As with any injury, the longer you wait the worse it can get and the less you can salvage.

Bad news, you're fucked. Be comforted by the knowledge that your death certificate with show CoViD-19 as the cause of death.
