Agreed! It wasn’t looking promising for the 1st 40 mins as they rolled through throwback scene after throwback scene. But by half way in I think it got consistently better. And Cruise’s time trial scene was pretty fucking good.
If you look past the diverse cast, then yeah. The new pilots are like the Burger King kid's club. There's no faggots and trannies it, so that makes it practically a unicorn in movies today.
Yeah. The new young pilot's cast is awful. They have no charisma. I don't remember any of them and don't care about them. I doubt any of them will ever become a superstar actor like Tom Cruise or Val Kilmer.
I think Miles Teller has been in a couple good films and might take off. This is probably his biggest project yet. The others? Never heard of them before - probably won't again.
I recommend you acquire the movie "War Dogs" on the high seas. Film that put Miles Teller on the map.
Your point? That doesn't mean his characters can't be interesting or that his acting is bad. A perpetual side character does not a bad actor make. Not everyone can be the hero.

If you didn't see it in the 80's it'll never have the spice of cold war apprehension. That's what made it good at the time, the fact that we were all still scared shitless of the Russians. In the context of that decade it was good versus evil.
It's got some sweet practical effects and some dope plane maneuvers. No libtard BS. The female characters are strong and independent without being "strong" "independent" women. It's entertaining, still cheesy though.
Wait til it comes out on DVD, and buy a cheap used copy from a record store or eBay. Or wait til one of the putlocker sites has it. Don't give Hollyweird access to your wallet. Let them get their money from government handouts.
Edit to add: everybody in America at that time just fucking loved the F-14. A pure dog fighter that could fight and win. It’s purpose was to engage and destroy the enemy. Protect the fleet, the carrier and return. Now we just got the F-18 it can kinda do things but not as great as the beloved maintenance nightmare we call the Tomcat. It was a true brawler. Topgun 2? meh, no F-14, not interested.
Personally, I think TG2 would've been cooler with F22s but their mission was an AtG assault so the F22 wouldn't be optimal. Also, the F22 is no longer in production F in chat for America's top tier dog fighter. I'm assuming you haven't seen TG2, because if you have, you'd know there is an F14 in it. Albeit, only for a short while at the end of the film
The original was enjoyable 80's cheese, but the events mostly made sense.
The original had F-14 and Migs over the Indian ocean suddenly escalate from just intimidating each other with missile locks, until one side retreated, to actually shooting each other down, for no apparent reason, with no mention of a war before or after. Just randomly murdering each other for sport. Regular Tuesday afternoon stuff, I guess. And then they went back to dog fighting school. To play volleyball and bang the hot teacher.

The "new" stuff you get is a more diverse set of pilots, and a mission that is basically the Star Wars attack on the Death Star, but with F-18s.
