Bing is the best of the horrible alternatives currently out there.

Rolling your own search engine is difficult and getting worse... The problem isn't creating or searching the database, really, it takes some money but it's not terrible. The problem is spam. There's no end of "search engine optimization" going on and filtering it out is getting more and more difficult as people discover and game the filters. That's the main reason Google isn't as amazing as it used to be.
