I've encountered two fawns. First time one was lying in a path I used to take to get to an abandoned smelting plant. It just stared at me while the mom made her presence known 20 or 30 feet off the path. Decided not to go to the plant that day.
Second time was in a field. It was curled up into a ball and fast asleep. I wanted to pet it, but left it alone and went off in the opposite direction. Didn't want to wake it and I generally take a "look, don't touch" approach to wildlife.
Fawns won't move for anything when their mother is away like that, maybe if you attacked it I suppose. I've almost ran over one with the lawn mower once, momma came out of the woods charging at me too.

No elk where I'm from, unfortunately.
