Be very careful if you do this. An oxygen imbalance, or the potting soil being too acidic or basic can easily kill the fish.

The plant medium isn't soil.

Right, I forgot about that since I made that post at around midnight. I forget exactly why the water's ph needs to be tested every so often, but I remember that it does. It probably has something to do with what aquaponics fertilizer you are using.

I was thinking more along the lines of:

Bacteria turns ammonia into nitrite

Yeah, but at what rate? How dirty is the pipe? How full of gunk? Enough to slow down output? How much ammonia gets past the crap stuck in the pipe?

It requires a filter that needs to be cleaned. I'm not sure how often you need to clean.

The ammonia that dissolved in the water won't be filtered as you would be using a physical filter, so the rate isn't relevant so long as ammonia in the water doesn't build up to toxic levels.

tilapia have almost no nutritional value

Wild caught tilapia do. The shit in the store is goy feed.

Or flavor.

How do thefish taste?

They taste just like chicken.

The problem, in my opinion, is what you're limited to growing with this method. Any crop that demands more than a wee bit (see what I did there?) of fertilizer won't grow well unless the water is so shitty (see!) that the fish suffer and/or die. That water doesn't exactly come back "clean".

Or crayfish

"Rob bob" does loads of cool aquaponics stuff on his jootube channel.

I've been looking into doing this stuff with freshwater crayfish or trout instead. Its all a bit complicated though, better for people with small yards.
