It’s worse than that, they’re not doing it for pity and approval, they’re doing it for straight up One-upsmanship and social status.

When your culture elevates the lowest to the highest levels of attention and notoriety, then to be the parent/guardian of one of the most special kinds of victim is a way for the parent not only to be relevant/special themselves, but to virtually guarantee that they remain that way. In a nihilistic world, people scratch and claw for meaning, even while they verbally dismiss the very sources of meaning in human lives. God doesn't exist. The kid was an accident. I'm a framework of chemicals that accidentally made me the way I am. Blah blah blah, I've considered suicide a bunch.

But then that makes the 'last half' of life look like a dim prospect. Everyone is fine when they're young and all of our hormones and cultural interpretations of the life cycle mean that life is still on the upshot.

But when one starts to reach his/her late 20s, and 30s and 40s, mortality rears its head. The land of milk and honey and possibility infinitum collapses into a person's lived reality, a kind of singleton that can feel like a prison for a person who has no meaning in life.

Now that person is a parent, perhaps by accident, perhaps not. The prospect of a child - who has defined the parent's life for 8-10 years - suddenly becoming older and developing into an adult is threatening to the parent for many reasons.

It means abandonment. It means mortality - it is literally a sign of the inevitable onslaught of time. But it could also mean resentment, if the parent never felt like they grew up, then unconsciously they do not want to see the child grow up either. If the parent felt the world was a challenging, horrible place they could not overcome, then they will prevent the child from having to face it - lest they overcome it and see their parent differently. They will make the child inferior to unconsciously validate their own inferiority as they cry over social media and collect sympathy.

The child is used like an object. Not even a human being. A living puppet.

So turn the child into a handicapped living doll that will always require the parent. Who will always be immature, and if not immature, at least severed from maturity in several key cognitive aspects. Create a victim who will forever give you meaning in digital land.
