Chickens are awesome. When I’ve had sick chickens in the past, the others all rally around her and protect her. It’s pretty sweet.

Roosters are amazing. Mine will throw himself at a predator to protect his hens. You should always keep at least one rooster.

I’ve witnessed chicken rape at a friends house. I like my sweet girls and I don’t want them nigger raped. I also don’t want to listen to a rooster. So, if I could have one that doesn’t rape and doesn’t crow, I’d do it. I’ve heard Capon are like that but they are illegal?

I don't know about Capons, but I wouldn't castrate a rooster personally. Having the ability to fertilize the eggs and create new chicks without outside help is one of my personal requirements for my backyard flock. If the chicken/egg industry shuts down tomorrow, it wouldn't change anything in my life really.

Roosters are rough on hens if you have too many roosters though. They will gang up and hold them down to fertilize the hens, and they will take turns on the same one for sure. I keep 1 rooster per 10 hens MAX. I have a ton of pullets and cockerels right now, and I will slaughter the majority of the cockerels right as they mature in order to protect the hens from that shit. I will probably keep 3-5 roosters for the couple dozen hens I will have just to be safe, but if they start ganging up on the hens I will just separate them into different areas with their respective hens and effectively create "clans" of chickens.

Sounds like you know what you’re doing, right on. I was making a delivery to a ranch property a few years back and watched this guys roosters gang rape a hen or two while I was there, just like you said. I didn’t like it, not cool.

in my case, I mean..., it was the rooster that protected the sick hen, who had been bitten by a marten, who wanted the egg inside her body... she lived another day or two and then went to chicken paradise.
