Is there something like an opensource hobbiest platform for drones? I'd love to mess around with it, but the thought of using proprietary hardware/software for something like this rubs me the wrong way.

I'd bet there is open source software for these things. I don't know much about them. The guy who made this video builds his own drones and has other videos about how to make them.

The hobby is called FPV and they wear VR goggles to see while piloting the drone.
