How the fuck did that plane have the thrust to weight ratio high enough to accommodate the absolute balls of steel the aviator and RIO had to have had to consider flying it?

Only because the British government wouldnt back Whittles plans. Whittle was way ahead of the rest but government dallying and German foresight ensured Von O’Hain’s work leapt ahead. The germans did however use axial compressors which were significantly more efficiant (and complex) compared to the centrifugal compressors of esrly British jets.

Stunning aircraft, spitfire pilots must have been rocked to see one fly past them. Fyi those remake 262’s dont use original engines rather modern ones cowled to look original.

beautiful piece of engineering

It was an amazing piece of engineering. But it was a very expensive high maintenance aircraft. The TBO was short. Material engineering was a little behind the requirements of a jet engine. Unfortunately, if they had thrown their full production capacity at the M-262, the Brit’s and the Yanks had jets ready to go. They were just concealing them from the USSR. Everybody knows you can’t have secrets from the KGB. They knew about the Manhattan project from the very beginning.

It was cutting edge for its day though, and it's amazing how they were able to make it happen with their primitive materials technology. That's part of what I love about these old planes :)
