I think the first thing people should debate is the fact we can see much farther than we should. Much farther than the 8 inches per mile squared. It's something you need to test yourself. Taking someone's word for it or looking at proofs like long distant photos, laser tests, etc. doesn't really have the same impact until you literally test it yourself.
So.. What's your #1 ball proof? Please don't say ships disappearing over the horizon, gravity, eclipses or NASA.

Assuming that's true, about the horizon being viewable longer than it should; why is it not their first instinct to suspect the rays of light are bending, like they do around your finger held near your eye? Or another explanation may be tested first.

It has been proven and can be done. Nobody ever said "it can't be done." As if nobody has ever considered or explored "bending light rays." It's one of the main reasons long distance tests have been done in many different atmospheric conditions. Physical poles spaced apart, lasers, infrared photography.. All done in varying conditions, over water, ice, at night over salt lakes.
The experiment can be done and has been done and I and many others accept the results, because we've done the tests ourselves. Like I said in my original comment, do the test yourself. Don't hide behind this nonsense about a magical bending light phenomenon.. or at least show proof of this happening over miles of supposed curvature.
