This is not true.

Balls to the wall refers to the ball governor.

You're thinking of "Balls out".

During WW2 the widow payouts for combat pilots was so generous (as part of a recruitment drive among crop dusters) that it was enough to pay off the mortgage on the farm and then some.

"He bought the farm" comes from this

I think that came from WW1, when everyone had a small family farm.

You might be right, but I don't think there were many US pilots in WW1...

I just thought it was meant for any soldier. And yeah, we didn’t fly in Europe.

The ammo rollout for a p-51 mustang measured about 27 feet long. If the pilot was to to come btb with no ammo left, he gave it the whole nine yards.

I don't know how true that is, but I heard it on the internet.

Looked it up. Apparently the phrase predates even WW1, first appearing sometime in the 1850s. Theories currently place it as being something to do with bolts of cloth being spun into clothing.

What about, "From the window to the wall?"

Now I am confused.

Same as how “balls deep” was a reference to old depth sounding measurements from sailing ships. Usually the rope they would lower into the water had ball-like things at the end so the guy sounding the depth had a final point to grip the rope and not accidentally drop the whole thing into the water.

I totally made that shit up.

What about the other balls? You must be a fag.
