How many expenses did they have? Did it live at home rent free? Say you got the job at 16 and worked every week for 2 years, saving up nearly everything you made, and you didn't have to pay rent, utilities etc, you could probably do it. I saved up nearly $2k in 5 months working a part time job that paid less than today's minimum wages before. I was living at home, and only paid for my car's insurance and fuel.
