Clickable Links which open on Aether

submitted by MagicMushroom to Goats_on_Aether 1.9 yearsMay 23, 2022 12:57:58 ago (+5/-2)     (Goats_on_Aether)

Hello, Goats!

If you have had difficulty opening Aether links in your web-browser, it might be because you have not instructed your system to associate aether:// links with the Aether application. This is a similar process to telling your computer to open .mp3 files with your favourite media player, e.g. VLC, or to open .epub files with your favourite e-book reader, e.g. Calibre.

How to do this depends upon your Operating System. There are instructions for Windows and Mac here:

https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-customize-your-default-apps-in-windows-and-macos

You might need to relaunch your applications or reboot before the changes come into effect.

Hopefully you will see a clickable link below, and if you hover over it, some information about the link should appear. If you click it, and you have configured your system to associate aether:// links with the Aether client, and you have your Aether client running, it should hopefully take you there.

Hyperlink for Voat

If you want to see the markdown used to create the above hyperlink, here it is:

`Hyperlink for Voat`

OK, thanks for the feedback. As a workaround till this is sorted, this might work for you:

In the Aether client at the top left there is a "Search" tool, with three categories which you can select from the tab: "Communities", "Content" and "People".

You can identify which category the link is by looking at the first part:

board = "Community"
thread = "Content"
* user = "People"

If you paste the hash after the / into the appropriate search, and click "Search", it ought to take you to the correct resource.

The documentation at the bottom of the page here tells us that a Webviewer is under development and will allow us to view Aether content without opening the client.

I experience the exact same result.

I liked the idea of aether when I first heard of it. Perhaps I will again someday, but at this time I am uninstalling its client.

I'm just going to copy and paste what I said to blumen:

I don't know why this is so hard for you and apparently a few others. It had a learning curve for me but I got it, and I'm a video nerd not a computer guy.

All I can say it's, it's a small community, but it's not dead and it works really well actually. I need to download it now on this new computer and see if I can help you guys out. It would be a great alternative to the places we tend to gather on on the internet.

EDIT: I just got back on and realize you have to go to browse communties, then all, then select "show not SFW communities" to get to b/Voat, maybe that's been the issue?

That might be it! Will check later. There is a setting in the configuration file which enables you to view NSFW communities by default. This might allow the client to go direct to the thread. Thanks!

People provide details and specifics which do not function or are misleading. Someone posted nothing in particular, but mentioned "Goats_on_Aether", whatever that is. I searched on aether for altogether too long and never found any group or whatever by that name. Others have posted what resemble links, but these simply open the app, and don't go anywhere. No search option is available inside the app to take these links and do anything with them.

I see I can browse around and play with it, randomly finding whatever, but that's not what I'm into at the moment, especially with people trying to hype it up with exaggerated claims, providing broken links. It reminds me of trump's stupid social whatever site which also doesn't work with a bunch of pointless hype behind it. After awhile getting bombarded with ads for a thing that doesn't work makes me rather strongly dislike said thing.

It works perfectly fine, but it's not idiot proof, which is probably most of what you're stumbling over frankly. I don't know who "hyped it up", but it does function well. Just turn on "show not safe for work communities on the "browse communities" tab...ffs...Let me know if you can't figure that out.

Using Brave on Windows and when I clicked the hyperlink a dialogue box popped up asking me if I wanted to open it with Aether, and there was a box I could select if I wanted this to always happen. It's that...fucking...easy...
