I can jump off cliffs into rivers. From perfect airplanes with a parachute. I've jumped 100 feet on my motocross bike. Ill ski off the biggest cornices with ease.

The one thing I CANT do is put myself in the earth and barely fit. OH Between claustrophobia and the fear of an earthquake.

One seismic burp and he's dinner for worms...I worked underground as a Hardrock Miner back in the 70s and I've seen fallen roof scale and pressure movement in the rock face...a buddy of mine was crushed underneath a slab of fallen roof that was estimated to be 6,000lbs (3 ton), his life was spared only because he was standing next to his scooptram or else he would've been flattened, entering a vug to search for precious gems or amethyst was a safety violation but we did it because at 19 years of age we didn't understand how close death was to us a mile underground...but
there are no words to describe how amazing a vug and the subterranean world is...now, I know too much, earth is not static, it's dynamic and powerful.

A VUG is a cavity in earth's geological strata, a hollow void in the rock...a geode is also a form of a vug only they are formed over millions of years by an accumulation of solidified gases with amethyst being the primary crystal rock lining the geode walls...I've seen vugs the size of swimming pools with amethyst and gold dripping from the earth.

Hey, how about there's just no caving. Expert guide or otherwise. Nobody cave. Ever. This looks like one of the worst possible things to do.

I wouldn't do this to save my family. If they fell into a place like this, where the only access was this space, I'd drop my cell phone and some granola bars in it, but that's really it.

But I imagine it is a compulsive thing. It reminds me of a buddy of mine who, no matter what, always had to swim to the deepest part of a body of water (within reason) and grab a handful of the muck from the bottom. If he couldn't reach, he'd still try every time. I suppose if there weren't people like this in the world, we'd rarely figure out 'yeah, but what the fuck if we could though?'

From a wiki I found on the guy:

John Edward Jones passed away while spelunking in the Nutty Putty Cave of Utah on November 24th, 2009. He was a medical student at the University of Virginia who was married to a woman named Emily and had a daughter named Lizzie, with a second child on the way to be born in June of 2010.

That's incredibly sad. A future, a wife, a daughter, possibly a son. Fucking tragic.

During his time stuck in the crevice, John had prayed and talked about his life and what he had hoped to do once he was out of the hole to a man overseeing his rescue, Ryan Shurtz. He apologized to Ryan about being overweight and made lighthearted commentary with his rescuers while they attempted to pull him out. After 28 hours of being stuck in the crevice, John Edward Jones became unresponsive and was declared dead.

The Nutty Putty Cave was sealed after the incident, and John's body still remains there.
